Throughout history, cats have stood beside soldiers, sailors, and airmen — silent heroes offering more than companionship. During World War I, it’s estimated that over 500,000 cats served in the trenches and aboard ships. Their duties went far beyond catching mice: Rodent control: Cats protected rations, ropes, and supplies from vermin that carried disease and destroyed equipment. Gas detection: Their sensitive reactions often gave early warning of poisonous gas attacks in the trenches. Ship service: Naval cats became mascots and pest controllers, travelling thousands of miles across dangerous seas. But their greatest role was emotional — bringing comfort, normality, and hope to those far from home. Whether perched on a soldier’s shoulder or curled up in a bunker, they reminded troops of the world they were fighting for. Whatever side, whatever uniform — the cats of war served, supported, and survived.
